Dorothy F. Shepard, of Ames, formerly of Gilbert, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at Abington on Grand. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way in Ames. Burial will be at Gilbert Cemetery in Gilbert.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Ames Historical Society or a charity of your choice.

Dorothy F. Shepard, of Ames, formerly of Gilbert, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at Abington on Grand. She was one day away from her 90th birthday. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way in Ames. Burial will be in Gilbert Cemetery.

Dorothy was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Ames, the daughter of Edward and Alice F. Hallowell Johnson. She was educated in the Ames schools and married Clare Shepard at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on Feb. 11, 1941. They farmed in the Gilbert area until 1970 when they moved to Ames. She was a very active farm wife and wonderful caretaker of her mother until her death.

She is survived by two first cousins, Edna Adams and Agatha Varnum, as well as cousin, Edna Whetstone, who in recent years served as her caretaker. She also is survived by Stephanie Wessman Lemmon and family, of Clive, who have known her as “Gramma Dee” for 40 years; and numerous other cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clare Shepard in 1983, her cousin, Charles Pantenburg in 1988; her mother, Alice, in 1999; and Mark Wessman, her other “grandkid,” in 2007.
