THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, September 29, 2010.

Vesta Lorraine VanTilbury, 88, of Nevada, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at Story County Senior Care. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at First United Methodist Church, 1036 Seventh St., in Nevada, with Pastor Kevin Leveck officiating. Private burial of the cremains will be in the Kingsley cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Vesta was born June 5, 1922, to Roy and Emma (Ray) Vannorsdel, and raised on a farm near Kingsley. She taught elementary grades for 35 years, her first two years at a one-room country schoolhouse and the last 19 years at Nevada Elementary School. She loved working in her yard and always looking for the spring arrival of the Baltimore Orioles for her grape jelly treat. In retirement, she enjoyed her Bible Study group, quilting, bridge, china painting, choir, bell choir, Stephen Ministry and volunteer work.

She is survived by her children, Jill (Gary) Johnson, of Ames, and Dallas VanTilbury, of Redondo Beach, Calif.; granddaughter, Heather Johnson and fiancé, Josh Peloquin, of North Liberty; one sister, Sylvia Yingst, of Dayton, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Gloria Vannorsdel, of Ames; and nieces and nephews.

Vesta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dean; and one brother, Everett on Dec. 3, 2001.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in Vesta’s name to First United Methodist Church or Homeward Hospice of Ames.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Vesta and her family.
