THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, September 24, 2010.

Gregg Gammack, 69, of Columbia, Ky., and Mesa Ariz., and formerly of Ames, died in a traffic accident Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010. A memorial gathering is being planned for Thanksgiving weekend in Mesa.

Gregg was born Jan. 18, 1941, to Robert J. and Ruth Gammack and was schooled in the Ames system. He graduated from Ames High School in 1959 and from Iowa State University in 1964. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and entered Navy flight training. He flew helicopters in Vietnam, and in 1967, he was awarded the Silver Star, one of many decorations he received during his active service. He recently retired from the Marine Corps Reserve as a major. He spent his life working in the aviation industry, which he dearly loved.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patsy; two sons, Jeff and Jason; and three grandsons, Jackson, Harrison and Beckett. He also leaves behind two brothers, Bill, of Lake Arrowhead, Calif., and Chris, of Hayesville, Iowa, and a host of friends whose lives he touched.
