NEVADA — Jack Moore, 82, of Nevada, died Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

John W. (Jack) Moore, loving and beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa, brother and friend, died of pneumonia at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa, early Saturday morning, September 11, 2010, with his two daughters by his side.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Interment was at the Peoria Cemetery near Maxwell.

Jack was born on October 20, 1927, in Collins, Iowa, to Macy (Mullihan) and William Moore. He was the second of six children. Jack grew up and attended school in Collins where he graduated in 1947. In 1948 he enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany and served in the Korean War. He was in the 3rd Infantry Division, 7th Infantry Regiment, and Big Red One. During his service he earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a member of the VFW.

On June 13, 1953, he married Alyce Jean Oxley at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Over the years, they made their home in Collins, Maxwell and Nevada, Iowa. Jack made his living as a carpenter. He was well-known and well-respected in his profession. His work ethic was unparalleled and his beautiful craftsmanship can be found throughout Nevada and Story County.

Jack was a devoted family man. He loved his two girls and they worshipped the ground he walked on. He never missed a school program and was immensely proud of their accomplishments over the years. His two grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved being “Grandpa.”

In his later years, Jack worked at the National Animal Disease Lab in Ames, Iowa. He retired in 1993. During his retirement years, he continued some carpentry, but he had been in declining healthy for the past six years.

Jack developed pneumonia recently and, as his condition worsened, he made the conscious decision to leave this life. For a man who was once so vibrant and active, he became sick and tired of being sick and tired. Jack survived the Korean War, triple coronary by-pass surgery and two bouts of cancer. He was a very strong person. He lived a really happy and full life. Sadly, it just wasn’t long enough for those who mourn him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alyce Jean Moore, of Nevada, Daughters Marcia Moore of West Des Moines, and Mary Lou (Gary) Flack of Nevada. He is also survived by his grandson, Ryan Flack of Ames, and his granddaughter, Morgan Flack of Nevada, his sisters, Lorena Cleverly of Indianola, Beverly Soseman of Joseph City, Arizona, Colleen (Bruce) Gore of Blue Earth, Minnesota, Crystal Christensen (Ken) of Greensboro, North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, a niece and a nephew.

Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.
