Hjalmar S. Nelson, 93, of Gilbert, died at home on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. A visitation was held on Friday, July 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel inAmes. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 17 at 11:00 a.m. at Gilbert Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Gilbert Cemetery.
Hjalmar Nelson was born April 7, 1917 in Story County to Nels and Taletta Nelson. He graduated from Story City High School. He earned a four year degree in business education from the University of Northern Iowa. He taught business for fifteen years in high schools in Blairsburg, Shipley and Gilbert.
He married Mildred "Millie" Frandson on June 20, 1941. He had been a member of Gilbert Lutheran Church.
He farmed near Gilbert and always had a big garden. He was the Oliver tractor dealer in Gilbert. He was an accomplished accordian player and loved doing woodwork.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mildred Nelson of Gilbert; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret Nelson and Bernice Frette; and a brother, Arnold Nelson.
