Walter Forrest Rasmusson, 91, of Nevada, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2010.
Forrest, youngest son of Walter C. and Lillie M. (Scott) Rasmusson, was born April 11, 1919, near McCallsburg, Iowa. He graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1935. On May 24, 1947, he married Lois (Clark) Rasmusson. A lifelong farmer, he and his family lived within two miles of his birthplace until he retired in 1988 and moved to Nevada.
Forrest belonged to the McCallsburg Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder, Sunday School teacher and lay speaker for many years. He served 12 years on the NESCO Community School Board and was a charter member of the McCallsburg Lions Club as well as belonging to Farm Bureau. He enjoyed attending many sporting events and 4-H competitions with his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered for his big hands, kind words and many stories he liked to tell.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Rasmusson of Nevada; his four children: Charles (Chris) Rasmusson of Nevada, Carol (Chuck) Balvanz of Hubbard, Alan (Penny) Rasmusson of Newton, Donna (Bill Schwertley) Rasmusson of Ames; six grandchildren: Matthew (Melanie) Rasmusson of Lynnville IA, Neil (Florinda) Rasmusson of Brea CA, Lea (Chris) Howe of Chicago IL, Ted (Mandy) Rasmusson of Ankeny IA, Joe (Jennifer) Balvanz of Ankeny IA, and Casey Balvanz of Ames IA. He enjoyed getting to know five great-grandchildren: Madison, Maria and Mylie Rasmusson and Max and Ben Rasmusson, as well as his three step-grandchildren, Jason and Josh Pollock and Chris Schwertley, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Irene Jacobson, and his brother Harry Rasmusson.
Funeral services were held at the Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg, Iowa, on Monday, July 19, with Pastor Wilbur Morfitt officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Richland Township.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the family to be used in Forrest’s memory in his home community.
Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing is in charge of the arrangements.
