THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, July 15, 2010.

Hjalmar S. Nelson, 93, of Gilbert, died at home Wednesday, July 14, 2010. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 16, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at Gilbert Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Gilbert Cemetery.

Hjalmar Nelson was born April 7, 1917, in Story County, to Nels and Taletta Nelson. He graduated from Story City High School. He earned a four-year degree in business education from the University of Northern Iowa. He taught business for 15 years in high schools in Blairsburg, Shipley and Gilbert.

He married Mildred “Millie” Frandson on June 20, 1941. He had been a member of Gilbert Lutheran Church.

He farmed near Gilbert and always had a big garden. He was the Oliver tractor dealer in Gilbert. He was an accomplished accordion player and loved doing woodwork.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mildred Nelson, of Gilbert; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret Nelson and Bernice Frette; and one brother, Arnold Nelson.
