THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, June 23, 2010.

Interment services for James Scott “Jim” Prather will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone, with he Rev. Philip Webb, of First United Methodist Church in Boone, officiating. He will be interred with his beloved wife, Shirley Grant Prather, who passed away Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009. Please join the family for a luncheon afterwards.

Jim Prather was born, raised and attended high school and college in Ames. Born Aug. 5, 1931, he was the third child of John W. and Stella (Scott) Prather, who resided on Grand Avenue in Ames. He graduated from Ames High School, attended Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, Mo., and studied electrical engineering at Iowa State University.

He served in the 101st Airborne, stationed in Fort Campbell, Ky. On Oct. 16, 1954, he married Shirley Grant, of Boone, at Ames United Methodist Church.

He had a long, successful career representing electrical control manufacturers and lived in Dallas, Texas; Memphis, Tenn.; Covington, La.; and finally, in retirement, moved to The Woodlands, Texas. He was married to Shirley Grant Prather for 52 devoted years and was the stalwart compass of his family and those whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his five children and four grandchildren, Marsha Prather Carlton, her husband, Mark Carlton and son, Ryan Carlton, all of The Woodlands, Texas; Jeffrey Scott Prather; Melinda “Mindy” Prather Paris, her husband, Phillip Paris, and their children, Zachary and Allison Paris, all of Solana Beach, Calif.; James Brian Prather, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and Michelle “Missy” Prather and her daughter, Hanna Prather, of Mechanicsville, Va. He also is survived by his sister, Mary Virginia Prather Neumann, and her husband, Dr. Arlo J. Neumann, of Orange City; sisters-in-law, Hazel Prather, of Sun City, Ariz., Barbara Prather, of Indianola, and Sue Grant Skoglund and husband, Gary I. Skoglund, of Tavares, Fla.; six nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Stella Prather; and two brothers, John W. “Jack” Prather and Joe Benton Prather.

Jim Prather passed away April 28, 2007, and was previously interred in the columbarium garden at The Woodlands, Texas, Methodist Church. He and his beloved bride, Shirley, will rest together in accordance with both their wishes. Their love and devotion to each other remain an inspiration to their children, family and friends.
