THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, June 22, 2010.

Verne Eslick died Sunday, June 20, 2010, at Israel Hospice House in Ames after a short battle with an aggressive brain tumor. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 24, at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery in Webster City.

Members of the Scotch/Irish Eslick family came to America about 1760 and settled in North Carolina. Seven Eslicks were in the Revolutionary War. In the late 1800s, the Eslicks made Iowa their destination and settled on a farm near Homer in Webster County. Generations of Eslicks are buried in nearby Vegors Cemetery.

Verne was born Sept. 19, 1918, on the family farm, the third child of Laurence and Ada (Hoshaw) Eslick. He attended country school and then graduated from Webster City High School in 1935. He also graduated from the Community College in Webster City. He farmed the family farm for many years and was a member of Homer Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge in Webster City.

He journeyed to Ellsworth to help transport and run errands for Clarice Pearson starting in the late 1980s and then lived in Ellsworth for more than 20 years. His interests included local history, keeping up with the news, reading newspapers, and watching college softball and basketball.

He is survived by two sisters, Zoe Petersen, of Storm Lake, and Beverly (Joseph) Bria, of Bessemer, Mich.; 14 nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Laurence Paul Eslick; one sister, Ruth Chalfant; two brothers-in-law, Clifford Chalfant and Robert L. Petersen; and one niece, Lynn Kristin Petersen.
