Shawn Peter White passed away on Saturday, June 5, after a courageous battle against myelodysplastic syndrome – pre-leukemia at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Surrounded by his family, he peacefully made his way to the arms of the Lord. Shawn is survived by his three children; Robert, Sarah and Andrew all of Polk City; Lois White, the mother of his children of Polk City; his parents, Robert and Marilyn White of Peterson; his siblings, Charles “Chuck” White of Spencer, Kevin (Diane) White of Peterson, Kathleen “Katie” (Bruce) Baumgarn of Madrid and Kara (Steve) Drew of Egan, South Dakota; along with aunts, uncles, several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Shawn was born June 15, 1956 in Spencer, Iowa, the son of Robert and Marilyn (Eddy) White. He graduated in 1975 from Sioux Valley High School in Linn Grove, Iowa. He received an AA Degree in Farm Equipment Mechanics in 1977 from Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg.

On June 15, 1985 he married Lois A. Halstead in Ankeny. He lived in Ankeny for 13 years and 21 years on his acreage near Polk City, where he raised sheep. He was employed during this time as a service foreman for industrial equipment businesses in central Iowa. Shawn was a dedicated worker who was available at all times to make sure the customer’s needs were met.

Shawn was a longtime member of Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart (OLIH) Catholic Church in Ankeny. He was a 3rd Degree in Knights of Columbus and also a member of Christian Experience Weekend. Shawn was a member of the Ankeny Jaycees and an Athletic Booster member in the North Polk School. He was a graduate and instructor for the Dale Carnegie Program. Shawn was also involved with the Boy Scouts.

Shawn was an avid outdoorsman, guiding his children to enjoy his love for fishing and hunting. He received Proud Angler Awards for Walleye, Small Mouth Bass and Blue Gill. He supported Robert, Sarah and Andrew with their FFA, 4-H and sports activities. He was a mentor to the boys involved in the football and wrestling programs at North Polk School, since he was active in these sports in high school. Shawn was an enthusiastic fairgoer to the Iowa State and Clay County Fair in Spencer. He enjoyed cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Shawn has an extensive library of video tapes from his kid’s activities and other memorable events. He was a good friend to many and had a wonderful sense of humor. Shawn was a faithful servant of God.

The family received friends Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at OLIH Catholic Church in Ankeny. A Vigil Service completed the visitation at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 10 at OLIH Catholic Church. At 9:30 a.m., prior to the Mass, a Rosary will be lead by the Knights of Columbus. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Peterson on Friday, June 11 following a solemn Mass at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Royal.

A special thank you is extended to the CCU nurses and staff at Mercy Medical Center for their care and comfort to Shawn. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society for research.
