THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, May 20, 2010.

Mary A. Uhlenhopp, 57, of Nevada, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St., in Nevada. Burial will be in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 21, at Central Presbyterian Church, 932 Fifth St., in Nevada.

Chet Ryan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mary was born Jan. 22, 1953, in Carroll, to Robert Neal and Lois Anne (Whiting) Shirbrown. She was a graduate of Coon Rapids High School and Drake University. Mary earned a master’s degree from Viterbo University in Wisconsin. On June 10, 1978, she married Darwin K. Uhlenhopp in Coon Rapids. She was a special education teacher for the Nevada Community Schools. She was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada, DAR and NCEA. Mary and Darwin were named outstanding citizens during Lincoln Highway Days. She enjoyed genealogy, reading, playing Bunco and watching her children play in sporting events.

She is survived by her husband, Darwin Uhlenhopp, of Nevada; one son, Nick Uhlenhopp, of Bowling Green, Ky.; two daughters, Pam (David) Karkosh and Brigietta Uhlenhopp, all of North Liberty; her mother, Lois Shirbrown, of Coon Rapids; two brothers, Fred (Mary Jo Pfeifer) Shirbrown, of Denison, and Peter Shirbrown, of Las Vegas; and one sister, Sarah (Paul) Lusmann, of Pleasant Hill.

Shewas preceded in death by her father, Robert Neal Shirbrown in July 2005.

Memorials may be directed in Mary’s name to One Heart Equestrian or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with Mary and her family.
