TWO LOCAL WOMEN DIED

MRS. CUNNINGHAM AND MRS. SCOTT WERE VICTIMS OF DISEASES

Two local women living in the east part of town were call by death during the past week, Mrs. Christine Scott passing away on Friday afternoon and Mrs. W. A. Cunningham Tuesday morning. A third death in the same neighborhood was that of Miss Bergitte Lura a little over a week ago.

Mrs. Christine Scott died late Friday afternoon after an illness of three months after an illnes of three months with heart complications. She had been cared for at the home of her sister, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Handaland. Although she had been seriously ill for a long time, death came unexpectedly. Mrs. Handeland had been in the room to see her and leaving the bedside for a few moments while a neighbor called, when she returned she found her sister dead.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Handeland home and at Salem church, Rev. Olaf Holen officiating. Interment was made in the Roland cemetery. The pall bearers were J. O. Jesendal, M. O. Ferkin, B. J. Solyst, G. A. Olson, Ole Hanson and J. V. Rasmusen.

Mrs. Scott was born in Helland, Husness, Norway, April 8, 1862, and passed away at Roland March 30, 1934, at the age of 71 years 11 months and 22 days.

She came to America in 1890 and lived in Roland for one year. She then went to Marshalltown where, in 1892, she married Martin Scott, who preceded her in death 22 years ago. She continued to live in and near Marshalltown until 1904, when she returned to Roland, where she has since resided. She operated the local hotel for several years when she first came to this community, but has lived in retirement now for a number of years.

She is survived by one daughter, Margaret Scott of Chicago. Two children, a son and daughter, died in infancy, another son, Hjalmar, died at the age of 16 years, and two daughters, Clara (Mrs. Louis Hill), and Alma (Mrs. Kinsey Thompson), died a number a years ago. Two grandchildren, Donald and Donna Thompson of Hadley, Minn., and one sister, Mrs. J. A. Handeland of this place, also survive. Three sisters and one brother have died previously in Norway.

Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were her daughter, Margaret Scott of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Ritter and family of Des Moines, Mrs. Carrie Hill, Louis Hill, Mrs. Adelaide Smedal and O. R. Solem of Nevada, and Mr. and Mrs. John Stole of Ames.

We wish to express our thanks to all the neighbors and friends for their assistance and sympathy extended us during the illness and death of our mother and sister, Mrs. Christine Scott. We wish to especially thank Rev. Olaf Holen for his many visits and comforting messages at the funeral, and also Mr. and Mrs. O. S.
