Former Roland Lady Expires

Former Teacher in Roland Schools Dies at Her Home in Kansas - Was a Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Hegland and Grew to Womanhood Here

The sad message bearing the tidings that Mrs. F. L. Slaughter, formerly Miss Minnie Hegland, had passed away at her home in Kinsley, Kan., and that the remains were already on their way here for interment. About ten days ago, a message was received asking some one to come out there at once as she was quite low, so her sisters, Mrs. A. M. Henderson, of Story City, and Miss Agnes Hegland, of this place, went out there and were with her to the end. Letters from them last week carried encouraging reports from the sick room, so the final message came as a terrible blow to her parents, sisters, and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Slaughter was for several years a teacher in the Roland schools and when she quit, married Prof. F. L. Slaughter, who was at that time principal of the town schools. They have for many years lived at Kinsley, Kan. Arrangements have not been made at this time for the funeral, but will undoubtedly be held today or tomorrow. The obituary will appear in next week's issue of the Record.

Mrs. Slaughter Laid to Rest

Former Prominent Roland Lady is Laid to Rest in Roland Cemetery, After Funeral Services have Been Conducted at Bergen Church - Many Friends in Attendance at the Funeral

The funeral of the late Mrs. F. L. Slaughter was held last Thursday afternoon from Bergen church, Rev. G. Smedal officiating. The church was filled with loving friends and relatives, who wished to pay her their last respects. The church was beautifully decorated and the floral offerings were many and very pretty. After the funeral sermon, a quartette composed of Mrs. O. T. Thompson, Miss Severie Hanson and Messrs E. G. Schlanbusch and Elmer Hanson sang a beautiful song.

Miss Minnie Hegland was born on the Hegland homestead just north of town on June 4, 1874, and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Hegland, of this place. She grew to womanhood here, attending the school of Roland, after which she studied at the State Normal School, later teaching in the rural schools of the county and later in the schools of Roland. the writer having been one of her pupils, and we shall always remember her as being a teacher that we liked, as will all who had her for their teacher.

In the fall of 1896, she was married to F. L. Slaughter, for several years a teacher in the Roland schools, and the [?spige?] fall they moved to Chicago, where Mr. Slaughter pursued a law course. Then he had finished his course, they moved to Story City, where they lived a couple years, after which they moved to Kinsley, Kan. At this place, Mr. Slaughter has been in the practice of his profession, at present being city attorney and enjoying a splendid practice.

Mrs. Slaughter had been feeling poorly all fall and was just ready to start for a visit to her parents at this place, when she was taken seriously ill and her relatives were called to her bedside, her sisters Mrs. A. M. Henderson, of Story City, and Miss Agnes Hegland, of this place, leaving at once to help take care of her. The physicians had diagnosed the ailment as a tumor, and deemed it advisable to perform an operation. She was taken to a hospital at Hutchinson, Kan., where the operation was performed, during which a child was born. The best physicians in the state were called in consultation, in an effort to save her life, but the nature of her ailment was such that nothing could be done. She passed away on Monday, Nov. 15, 1909, being 35 years, 5 months and 1 days old, when called by the Angel of Death. The child lived until Monday when it passed away, surviving its mother by only a week.

Besides her parents, Mrs. Slaughter leaves seven sisters and one brother to mourn her death, they being, Mrs. H. E. Myrah, of this place; Mrs. A. M. Henderson, of Story City; Mrs. B. M. Rasmusen, of Stavanger, Norway; Mr. M. J. Hegland, of Roseau, Minn.; Mrs. F. E. Hansen, of Nevada; Mrs. O. S. Boyd, of this place, Miss Sara Hegland, of Stavanger, Norway; Miss Agnes Hegland, of this place. Numerous other relatives and friends are left to mourn her death. The sorrowing husband, parents, brother and sisters, and extended the sincere sympathy of their many friends in the hour of their deep affliction.
