Earl Harry Freel was born Jan. 10, 1912, in Carlisle, to Oss and Flora (Deaton) Freel. He attended high school in Ames and graduated in 1930. After finishing school, he stayed in Ames and worked as a mechanic in the local service stations. During that time, he met Roxie Hill at a church picnic, and they were married in 1934. He and Roxie moved to Colorado for a short time and then moved back to Ames in 1946 where he owned and operated his own station, “Earl’s Garage,” for 15 years. He then went to work for Iowa State University as a physical plant technician. He retired in 1975 after 20 years of service. During his retirement, Roxie and Earl traveled a lot, and he was proud to say that they drove to every state in the union except Hawaii. After visiting the Ozarks during their travels, they settled down in Forsyth, Mo., in 1977. His wife, Roxie, died in 2001.

He was extremely passionate about fly fishing, and he enjoyed hunting, woodworking, traveling, photography and playing dominoes with his family and friends. He was a very outgoing, hardworking man who never knew a stranger. He had a great love for life and was a proud father and grandfather.

He is survived by one son, Michael Freel and wife, Lois, of Forsyth, Mo.; one daughter, Nancy Thompson and husband, Jimmie, of Ames; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Roxie Freel; one son, Barry Freel; and two brothers, Ossie and Emmett Freel.
