THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, April 20, 2010.

Wayne R. Tjelmeland, 75, of Bloomington, Ill., and Mesa, Ariz., in the winter, died Thursday, April 15, 2010, at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, Ill. His graveside inurnment service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, in Roland Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow at Salem Lutheran Church in Roland. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lutheran Services in Iowa, P.O. Box 848, Waverly, IA, 50677, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

He was born April 17, 1934, in rural Nevada, the son of Ward and Gladys Osmundson Tjelmeland. He married Mary Ann Twedt May 23, 1954, in Roland. Mary Ann survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Karen Tjelmeland, of Chandler, Ariz., and Julie Tjelmeland, of Bloomington, Ill., along with his “favorite” grandson, Keanan and “favorite” granddaughter, Whitney; two sisters, Delores Campbell, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Lola Anderson, of Nevada; and three brothers, Leo, of Nevada, Joel, of Springfield, Ill., and Gordon, of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Harold, Wallace, Gary and Keith.

He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomington.

He graduated high school from Roland, and earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. He taught school in Vinton prior to working for Farmer’s Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa and relocating to Atlantic. The family later moved to Bloomington, Ill., where he retired in 1996.

He was known by many for his expertise in wood working and clock making. He was an avid golfer and No. 1 supporter of his grandchildren’s sporting events. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends that he and Mary made over the years.

We thank God for the gift of our wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by many.

Calvert and Metzler Memorial Homes of Bloomington, Ill., is assisting with arrangements.
