Carlton Robert Mueller, 90, of Ames, died Thursday, April 15, 2010. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 23, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at First Baptist Church in Ames.

Carlton Robert Mueller 90, of Ames, died Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Western Home in Cedar Falls. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at First Baptist Church, 200 Lynn Ave., in Ames. Burial will be next to his beloved wife in Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 23, at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., in Ames.

Carlton was born Jan. 15, 1920, in Dubuque, the son of Henry and Ella (Roschi) Mueller. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1938 and from Iowa State College in 1942 with a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering. There he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Tau Beta Pi and Tau Sigma Delta, and served as vice president of the AGC chapter.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force Nov. 11, 1943. He served with the 14th Air Force in China, Burma, India Theatre. He separated as 1st Lieutenant in 1946. After the service, he started Mueller Construction Inc. in Marshalltown, serving Central Iowa as a building contractor. He was an active member of the Master Builders of Iowa. He retired from the construction business in 1977.

He was a member of the Za Ga Zig Shrine and Story County Shrine Club and a generous benefactor of the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.

On Dec. 28, 1941, he married Ruth Ann Shaw, of Cainsville, Mo. She preceded him in death on March 3, 1999. From that marriage, five children were born, Nancy (Wesley) Merryman, of Cedar Rapids, Susan (Ron) Peterson, of Kansas City, Mo., Linda (Dennis) Kvidera, of Bellevue, Wash., Richard (Laurie) Mueller, of St. Charles, Ill., and Debra (Jack) Oleson, of Cedar Falls.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, along with 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Carlton and Ruth Ann moved to Ames in 1985 to be closer to their Cyclones. From 1954 until 2008, he continuously held season tickets to both football and men’s basketball. He also became an avid fan of the women’s basketball and wrestling programs, and was a member of the Order of the Knoll, the Campanile Guild,and the Cyclones Club. He was also a member of First Baptist Church.
