Robert L. Wright was born July 30, 1920, to Robert J. and Helen (Johnson) Wright in Hawarden. He grew to manhood in Hawarden graduating from High School at the height of the depression in 1938. With very little work to be had, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years and was located in Cherokee. He worked in Cherokee as a truck driver and as an apprentice mechanic.

Robert was drafted into World War II in November 1942. The first period was with the command and general staff school detachment. He ended his period of military service with the Panama Canal Defense Command. Robert was discharged February 1946.

On March 10, 1946, he married Ruth Jean Trudgeon, of Independence, Mo. To them were born three children: David, Donna and Margaret. Robert and his wife, Ruth, enrolled at Morningside College that fall with the aid of the GI Bill. Robert graduated in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. During the last two years of his college education, he worked full time for the Iowa Air National Guard at the Sioux City Air Base. He continued employment there. He and his unit were called to active duty with the Air Force from April 1952 until January 1954, being stationed in Maine and Louisiana. Robert was discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant, the entire period in flight operations of the 174th Fighter Squadron.

His early employment was as a credit manager with the Borden Company in Des Moines and then as office manager for them in Marshalltown. The last 20 years of his employment until retirement in 1986 was a business manager for Collegiate Manufacturing Company.

In Ames, his wife Ruth Jean died of cancer on July 5, 1987. He then married Eleanor Anderson, Dec. 10, 1988. She too passed away as the result of cancer on June 27, 2000. He then married Francis Hagen, Dec. 1, 2001.

Robert enjoyed traveling, covering 49 of our states. He especially enjoyed spending vacations with his family in the mountains of Wyoming, fishing and hiking. He swam and walked for much of his life. He spent some of retirement with woodworking and compiling and researching his maternal family ancestry tree. He continued to walk almost daily well into his late 80s. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 37, Ames Elks Lodge 1626, and Ames Moose Lodge 520. He leaves behind his wife Francis, his children David, Donna Schouweiler, Margaret Ragner, granddaughter Samantha Davis and three stepdaughters Belinda Merritt, Doreen Spencer and Sheryl Hagen.

Viewing for Robert Lloyd Wright will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. A memorial service will be conducted at Bethesda Lutheran Church at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, with private family burial at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
