COLO — Janet Ihlene (Hansen) Collins was born in rural Story County on April 19, 1942. She was the third of four children born to Ingvald and Jerene (Hovde) Hansen. She attended Milford Township School until her family moved to Roland when she was a high school sophomore. Janet played basketball for the Roland Rockets, and she had the privilege of playing in the Girls’ State Basketball Tournament in 1960. She was recognized as a Runner-Up All State Guard.

On June 18, 1960, Janet married Robert Paul Collins at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland. She then joined Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. Bob and Janet lived on a farm in rural Colo where they raised three daughters, Jill (Al) Weber, Beth (Mike) Klostermann, and Patty (Perry) Harms. Janet was proud of her Norwegian heritage and family traditions. She loved to sew, play cards, travel, and spend time with her family and friends.

Janet was a homemaker until the girls all left home, and then she worked for Durlam & Durlam Clothing in Ames as a seamstress for 19 years. Janet was a 4-H leader for the New Albany Country Pioneers for 10 years and a member of the Story County Planning & Zoning Commission for several years. She was a member of F, C & A Club, ODO Club, the AM Chapter of PEO in Nevada, the Story County Medical Center Endowment Foundation Board, and several bridge groups.

For the past three years, Janet valiantly fought colon cancer. She passed away peacefully at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on March 12, 2010.

Janet is survived by her husband, Bob, of 50 years; her three daughters and her three sons-in-law; five granddaughters: Lisa (Tim) Hartung, Amy Weber, and Kirsten, Amelia, and Meredith Harms; her mother; two brothers: Rodney (Sue) Hansen & Larry (Rhonda) Hansen); seven nephews; two nieces; and several great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her father and sister, Alice Roberts.

The funeral was held on Monday at the Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St. Nevada, IA. Memorials can be directed to the Janet Collins Memorial Fund.
