Russell L. Powers was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Brandon, S.D., the son of Albert M. and Lena (Sittig) Powers. He spent his youth in South Dakota on his parents’ farm near Brandon. As a young man, he enjoyed hunting pheasant and deer with his brother, father and grandfather. Russell’s mother always canned the game and provided many meals for the family. He also played baseball and developed a love for the game, which continued throughout his life as he enjoyed following and attending games for his favorite team, the St. Louis Cardinals.

He married Donna Millage Oct. 29, 1955, in Sioux Falls, S.D. He began his working career with Minneapolis Honeywell and Powers Controls as an industrial heating and cooling specialist. He and Donna moved to Iowa and he worked first for the Iowa Department of Transportation and eventually for Iowa State University in the Physical Plant Department as an environmental specialist. He retired after 27 years of service in 1989. The couple purchased their first farmland in Boone County in 1964 and had been engaged in farming since that time. Farming had always been his life interest and joy. In earlier years, he enjoyed pitching baseball, bowling, hunting and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, of Boone; four sons, Rodney Powers and wife, Kathy, of St. Louis, Mo., Tony Powers and special friend, Niki Crouthamel, of Boone, Greg Powers, of Des Moines, and Brad Powers, of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Joseph, Emily, Brent, Lauren, Eric, Benjamin, and Brittany Powers; brother, Albert L. Powers, of Trent, S.D.; sister, Barbara Halbersma, of Brandon, S.D.; brother-in-law, Robert Millage and wife, Mary, of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Evelyn Wildermuth, of Galesburg, Ill.; several nieces and nephews; and Andy Powers and Barb Henry who remain close to the family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
