Death of Former Resident

Wm. Backous, former resident of the Collins community, died at his home near Aberdeen, S. D., Aug 26.

Mrs. Geo. Cheville of Rhodes, Mrs. Lavina Duesbury and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Duesbury were called to Dakota on account of his illness and arrived there the day before his death. He was a brother of Mrs. Cheville and Mrs. Lavina Duesbury.

Funeral services were held Sept. 1.

William H. Backous, 77, died at his home at Wetonka, S. D., on Monday, Sept 5, after a short illness.

Wm. H. Backus was born at Cliff Yorkshire, England, July 19, 1861. In the winter of 1882, at the age of 21, he came to the States, locating near Peoria, Ia., coming to South Dakota in 1909, settling on the present farm home, where he has since resided.

In August, 1882, he was married to Rose E. Tomlinson of Maxwell. His wife died May 20, 1936.

He leaves to mourn his passing five sons and a daughter, Charley, Samuel and Jesse of Wetonka; Walter and Floyd of Westport; Ettna of Fredrick. Two sons and a daughter preceded him in death. Three sisters and a brother, Arthur of Ames, Levene Duesbury of Maxwell, Charlotte Cheville of Rhodes, and Emma Lunn of Selby, England; also 31 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Huebl Chapel on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. R. C. Keagy of the Methodist church officiating. Interment was made in the family lot in Riverside cemetery.

Relatives from away attending the services were: Mrs. Charlotte Cheville of Rhodes; Levene Duesbury, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tomlinson, Mr. and Mrs. Lonly Tomlinson and Joan, all of Maxwell; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Duesbury of Collins; J. W. Oxley, Mr. and Mrs. B. T. Oxley, Mrs. Henry Osier, James Sawrey, Jr., all of Coggswell, N. D.

Funeral services were largely attended. Mrs. Louis Krueger, accompanied by Mrs. Swihart sang "Nearer My God to Thee," "Abide With Me" and "God WIll Take Care of You."

Pall bearers were Ben Garmon, Bert Green, Lou Lorber, Sam Alldritt, Jim McIntyre and Jim Hutton.
