Genevieve E. Haynes, 84, of Nevada died on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at Story County Medical Center. Memorial services are pending with Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.

Genevieve Eloise Haynes, 84, of Nevada, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at the Story County Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 15, at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth St. in Nevada. Burial will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Genevieve was born on Aug. 18, 1925, to William and Grace (Musselman) Smith in Ottumwa. She resided in rural Ottumwa, where she was the youngest of 12. Her mother died when Jenny was 12 years old.

Upon completion of eighth grade, she embarked on many adventures taking her to several siblings across the country. Sometime later she came back to Des Moines to live with a brother.

Jenny came to Nevada with a family who had hired her as a live-in nanny. She met Bernard Haynes at the popular Candy Kitchen in Nevada.

Barney and Jenny were married July 8, 1949, and made their home in Nevada. Jenny enjoyed gardening, playing cards, cooking, sewing, crocheting, babysitting and watching her grandchildren’s soccer games.

Genevieve is survived by her daughter, Sherri Bainter, and son-in-law, Harvey Bainter, of Nevada; four grandchildren, Harvey Bainter III, of Marshalltown, Jason Bainter, of Nevada, Jacob Bainter (Stacey), of Nevada, and Rickie Bainter, of Nevada; 10 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Mildred Love, of Ames; and many nieces and nephews.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bernard, on Oct. 18, 1992, her son Richard “Bugsy” Haynes on Sept. 27, 2006, all of her siblings and their spouses.

A memorial fund has been established in Genevieve’s name. Chet Ryan Mortuary has been entrusted with Genevieve and her family.
