LAST CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIED
---
INJURIES PROVE FATAL TO R. P. SHEFFIELD FOLLOWING ACCIDENTRoyal P. Sheffield, 89, sole surviving veteran of the Civil War in Howard township, died at the Story City hospital Thursday.
The veteran had been at the hospital for about four weeks, following an accident in which he was struck down and a truck run over one of his legs breaking the bone below the knee.
Mr. Sheffield had apparently been getting along very nicely for one of his advanced years, until Thursday morning when he suddenly began to weaken, his heart failed him and he passed away about 1 o'clock.
Royal P. Sheffield was one of the real pioneers of this part of the county, having been one of the early settlers in the southwest corner of Howard township, coming here with his parents in the fifties and settling on a farm which he still owned at the time of his death.
He leaves four children, they being Clinton, the youngest son with whom he had been making his home on the old homestead five miles southwest of Roland; Frank, who lived in Story City; Mrs. George Wiggins of Story City, and a daughter, Stella Sherk, whose home is in Colorado.
Mrs. Sheffield, whose maiden name was Minelva Squires, died about 12 years ago. Three of the children who died after reaching manhood or womanhood, were Scott and Roy Sheffield, sons, and Nettie, a daughter.
The funeral was held Monday at the Grace Evangelical church in Story City following a short service at the Henderson funeral home. Burial was made in the Sheffield cemetery near the Sheffield home. The American Legion post at Story City, together with members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars from other places, took part in the service.
