May 15, 1930Collins and community mourn the loss of another well loved and respected pioneer.
Mrs. Sarah Mead passed away Saturday evening at 7:40 o'clock at the Eastern
Star home at Boone, aged 81 years, 6 months and 6 days, death resulting from a stroke
of apoplexy.Funeral services were held in the Collins U.B. church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock
conducted by the Rev. S. A. Fisher and the Collins Chapter of the Order of the Eastern
Star, of which she had been a member for nearly thirty years."Fade, Fade Each Earthly Joy" and "The Long Long Road" were beautifully sung
by a quartet composed of Mrs. E. H. Haas, Miss Vernice Fisher, Bradford Stevens and
T. E. Huntrod, and Mrs. Alice Marsh sang "There'll Be No Tears in Paradise", in a most
expressive manner. They were very ably assisted by Mrs. Hugh Fertig at the piano.She was laid to rest in the Collins Evergreen cemetery by the side of her husband
Pallbearers were: William Sinnott, Stephen Carr, Warren Kitchel, Frank Day, Elmer
Bence and Scott Marsh.OBITUARY
Sarah Adeline, daughter of Wilson and Mary Fish, was born November 4, 1848 in
Huron county, Ohio. She same came to Iowa with her parents when 9 years of age, where
she grew to womanhood.She was united in marriage to Theophillis Mansfield on October 4, 1866, and to
this union six children were born. One son, Guy, died at the age of six, February 4,
1880. The other five are Mrs. Mary Gilson of Laurel, Iowa, Percy of Nichols, Wisconsin;
Ernie of Chicago, Leo of St. Paul, Minnesota; and Roy of Des Moines.Mr. Mansfield died July 13, 1884. On August 3, 1886 she was again united in
marriage to Frank M. Mead, who died March 4, 1900. To this union were born three children:
Fred of Collins, Mrs. Edna Halterman of Des Moines, and Glenn of Cambridge.She was a member of the Methodist Protestant church of Collins.
The last eight months of her life were spent at the Eastern Star home at Boone, Iowa.
She leaves the eight children named; thirty grandchildren; twenty-three great grand-
children; and two great great grandchildren. Also one sister, Miss Etta Fish of Collins;
two half-sisters, Mrs. Luella Watson of Rhodes and Mrs. Minerva Scott of Blair, Nebraska;
two half-brothers, Frank Fish of Melbourne and Walter Fish of Ames; one step-brother,
William Beard of Rhodes, and one step-sister, Mrs. Amanda Richmond of Rhodes.Three brothers and one sister have preceded her in death. They were Orson Fish,
David Fish, Mrs. Phoebe Mead and Charles gish, who passed away just four weeks prior to
her death.She leaves a host of friends and neighbors and had made many new friends during her
stay at Boone. The entire community deeply mourns her passing and extends sincerest
sympathy to the bereaved family.The out of town relatives present were: Mrs. Mary Gilson, Mrs. Adeline Callahan,
Ralph Parker and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Parker of Laurel; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Mansfield and daughter
Helen of Des Moines; Glen Mead and two children of Cambridge; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fish of
Ames; Wm. Beard and Mrs. Amanda Richmond of Rhodes; Mrs. Ralph Dunahoo of Shipley;
Herbert Halterman and Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Hanson of Nevada; and Mr. and Mrs. George Mead
of State Center.
