THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, February 2, 2010.

LaVerne Francis Stevens, 73, of Colo, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at Rolling Green Village in Nevada. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo, with Father Rick Dagit officiating. Burial will be in Colo Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 3, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m., at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada.

LaVerne was born March 4, 1936, in Brooklyn, to Ben and Florence E. (Minnaert) Stevens. He graduated from Conroy Consolidated High School. On Dec. 27, 1958, Vern married Gelene Joy Hutton at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo. He worked as a manager of fertilizer and chemical plants in Nevada and Ames. He managed for Coopers Mill, Gerlach Supply and later for S & J Ag in Nevada. His last employment was with Maximum Ag in his retirement years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo and the Colo Fire Department. He and Gelene enjoyed a permanent camping spot at Twin Anchors campground for nearly five years.

He is survived by his wife, Gelene, of Colo; one son, Jeff, of Indianapolis; two daughters, Julie (Carroll) Thompson, of Clarion, and Joni (Kraig) Downs, of Pella; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Dave Stevens, of Marengo, and Don (Janet) Stevens, Gary (Judy) Stevens and Tom Stevens, all of Cedar Rapids; six sisters, Pat (Robert) Seye, of Ladora, Marcella Hilton, of Cedar Rapids, Loretta (Jack) Booth, of Sheboygan, Wis., Janet (Ken) Fish, of North Carolina, Mary Mumm, of Marengo, and Beverly (Larry) Neswold, of Cedar Rapids; and one sister-in-law, Diane Stevens, of Fairfax.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leroy and Bernie Stevens.

A memorial fund has been established in Vern’s name.
