Ruby Thompson, 92, of Madrid died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Madrid Home. Services were Saturday, January 30 at the Evangelical Free Church in Madrid.

Ruby Helen Weeks Thompson was born July 11, 1917 on a farm near Slater, Iowa to Thomas & Elsbeth Weeks and then lived in the Slater area most of her life. She married Marvin Severin Thompson on April 16, 1938 and made their home in Williams, IA until 1952 when they moved back to the Slater area. They raised five boys and three girls and in 1959, the first of 64 grandchildren and great-grandchildren was born.

After Marvin retired from John Deere, they moved into Slater in 1978 where she lived until 2001. Ruby then moved into the Madrid Home to live until she went to heaven on January 26, 2010.

Ruby accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1940 while living in Williams. In 1955, they became members of the Madrid Evangelical Free Church where she and Marvin became active and faithful members serving the Lord in a number of ways. She was a prayer warrior, loved to read her Bible and teach children. Together they supported and prayed for missionaries and other organizations who were involved in proclaiming the Gospel of Christ. Her example of living faithfully for the Lord will be remembered by many people for years to come.

She loved flowers and gardening, sewing, cooking different recipes, reading, playing games, and visits from family and friends. Ruby was a soft-spoken humble mother who worked hard in every endeavor she undertook. Besides being a homemaker, she was also a cook in the Slater Schools and served as a volunteer in her church and the Madrid Home. She had a servant’s heart and a desire that all of her family members as well as other people she met would have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She demonstrated her love for her family and others by her actions.

Ruby was preceded in death by Marvin, her husband of 59 years; one grandson, Andrew Thompson; two great-grandchildren: Zachary Jensen and Brooke Leland; her parents, Thomas & Elsbeth Weeks; two brothers, William Weeks and Robert Weeks; and one infant sister, Marian Weeks.

Her survivors include eight children and their spouses: Marilyn (Bob), Ron (Sharon), Eileen (Darold), Dave (Jackie), Paul, Faye, Chuck (Jo) and Brian (DeAnn); two sisters June Swanson and Dorathy Severson; one brother, Ervin (Elaine) Weeks; and one sister-in-law, Elaine Weeks; and many nephews and nieces.

Memorials may be given to the Madrid Home, Madrid Evangelical Free Church or Wesley Hospice.
