THE TRI-COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, January 21, 2010.

Dorothy Mae Waltz, 86, of Slater passed away Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the Madrid Home. The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 23 at 2:30 at the Slater United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service.

Dorothy was the oldest child of Frank and Agnes (Severson) Zenor. She was born in Burt, IA on May 17, 1923. Her family moved to Slater a few months later. Dorothy graduated from Slater High School in 1942. While in school she was involved in all school activities.

In August, 1942, she married Asa G. Michael. Since it was during the war, Asa went to the service and Dorothy worked at the Ordnance Plant. She also attended The American Beauty School.

She lived in Des Moines for many years. She was employed at Younkers for 27 years, selling china, working in accounts payable and later in the warehouse.

In 1964 she married Dale L. Waltz. After retiring in 1980, they moved to Arkansas. When her husband passed away Dorothy moved back to Slater to be near her family.

Dorothy was a member of the Eastern Star and attended the Slater United Methodist Church. She had a strong faith in God and a great sense of humor. With her sharp mind and years of wisdom, she was always trying to make things better for the world around her. She loved her family, animals, collecting strawberries, gardening, cooking, crocheting, gospel music and hymns, friends and meeting new people. She touched many peoples’ lives over the years. Dorothy always tried to teach others from her past experiences in life, while being a great listener. She was known around Slater as the lady with the scooter and little dog.

She would say, “My life has been interesting. Not exciting, but interesting. But God has continued to guide me forward”.

Dorothy is survived by her nieces, Ruth (Pete) Evans, Sharon (Chuck) Giebel, Lois (Mike) Boyd, Sherri (Wayne) Moiser, and nephew Michael (Wanda) Zenor, many great nieces and nephews, several great-great nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law, Helen Zenor, along with many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, her sister, Gayetta Wood, and her brother, Richard Zenor.

Her last words to you whenever you parted were, “Be good!”

Soderstrum-Riis is assisting the family with the arrangements.
