THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, January 19, 2010.

Ruth Louise Dahlberg Smith died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at Northcrest Health Care Center in Ames, following a long illness. A memorial service date has not been set.

Born Sept. 2, 1917, the eldest of four children, she was raised on a farm in Springfield, Minn. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1939 in home economics. She married Emerson Reid Smith June 15, 1941, and subsequently moved to Topeka, Kan., where she lived until 1967. After Emerson’s death, she returned to Ames, where she taught food and nutrition at ISU. After completing a master’s degree in education at ISU, she worked conducting tests at the ISU Meat Sciences Laboratory until retirement. She was committed to service to others throughout her life, including volunteering for Meals on Wheels, FISH, Libraries Abroad, and involvement in promotion of international understanding through educational exchange programs.

She is survived by three children, Alan Reid (Joan) Smith, of Orinda, Calif., Elizabeth Alexander, of Okemos, Mich., and David Eugene (Jan) Smith, of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; four grandchildren, Leslie Leve, Dana Luis, Patrick Alexander and Stephen Alexander; five great-grandchildren, Alex and Isaac Leve, Nathan and Caleb Luis, and Colin Alexander; one sister, Betty Halverson; and one sister-in-law, Gwen Dahlberg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emerson; one brother, Robert Dahlberg; and one sister, Helen Wilson.

To honor Ruth’s interest in promoting international understanding, the Ruth Dahlberg Smith Study Abroad Scholarship has been established to aid students who could not otherwise afford to study abroad.
