THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, January 19, 2010.
Fern Catherine Rathbun Thompson, 92, of Madrid, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at Madrid Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater.
Fern graduated from Napier High School. On June 11, 1937, she married Myron Thompson, and they lived on a farm just southeast of Slater. In 1941, they bought a farm west of Kelley, and she lived there for 59 years. She took an active part in farming besides always being a good homemaker and Norwegian cook. She was a Kelley school cook for a number of years.
She loved her family, her farm life, traveling (from going along with Myron for implement parts to touring Norway), genealogy and her friends. She and Myron visited all 50 states and also enjoyed spending many winters in Texas.
She is survived by her four children, Duane, Donna, Linda and Denise; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Myron in 1987; an infant brother, Harold; and her younger brother, Lynn.
Memorials may be directed to Madrid Home, to the ACTES Fund or to Israel Family Hospice House.
