David Sayre McGlothlen was born Feb. 2, 1943, in Jefferson, to Robert and Betty Sayre McGlothlen. He attended Ames Elementary and graduated from Ames High School in 1961. He became a fireman before he moved to Southern California, where he was an officer with the Orange County Police Department, and he later worked as an air tanker pilot for the California Department of Forestry. He enjoyed working on cars and flying, eventually working for the Federal Aviation Administration in Anchorage, Alaska.
David always considered himself very blessed, being able to do so many things and see so many places in the world; it was as if he was living every boy’s dream. He loved biking, hunting, flying, being with his family and friends and even a periodic cigar with a glass of Jack. He moved back to Iowa to reconnect with family. David was a Mason, belonging to the Masonic Lodge No. 249 in Ames. He was active in his local community organizing a fly in breakfast, working on the Lucas County Tourism Board, and currently serving on the Chariton School Board. He was witty, loyal, trustworthy, a great husband, grandpa, father, son and friend.
He will be missed by his wife of 24 years, Hope Ann McGlothlen; his mother, Betty Roelofsen; stepsister, Norma (Dave) Bappe; sister, Nancy (Ron) Cherkas; daughter, Megan Jean McGlothlen; son, David (Lisa) McGlothlen; grandchildren, A.J. and Grace McGlothlen; and many other family and friends.
Preceding David in death was his father, Robert McGlothlen; stepdad, Henry “Bob” Roelofsen; and grandmother, Lottie Sayre.
