A memorial service for Eileen Louise Freers will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, at the Northcrest Community Green Room in Ames.

Eileen Louise Freers passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Northcrest Health Care Center in Ames. Eileen was born April 9, 1916, in Marshall County, Iowa, to M.V. Nelson and Rosella Helin Nelson. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Marshalltown. After graduation, she was employed as a dental assistant to Dr. M.G. Knodle for 10 years. She married Richard S. Freers April 15, 1941, in Marshalltown. She was employed as a dental assistant at Station Hospital Camp Butner where her husband was preparing for deployment to Europe during World War II. Upon her husband’s return from Germany, they lived in Marshalltown and moved to Burlington in 1948.

She was an active member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and St. Paul’s Home and School Association in Burlington. She was an energetic member of the community and volunteered numerous hours supporting local and national non-profit organizations including Easter Seal Society, Heart Association, March of Dimes, Community Chest Red Feather Campaign, Red Cross, Cancer and Muscular Dystrophy associations.

She had been employed as a processing specialist for the LIHEAP Program of Community Action of Southeast Iowa for 22 1/2 years. She retired in 2003 due to health problems.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, antiquing, quilting, reading, refinishing furniture and working in her yard.

In 2006, she moved to Ames, making her home at Northcrest Community.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Kay Freers (John) Doyle, of Ames; one son, Stephen S. (Lista) Freers, of Cedar Falls, four grandchildren, John J. (Kristy) Doyle, Katie Rose (Kyle) Youngberg, and LaRae and Emily Freers; six great-grandchildren, Dakota, Drew, Mackenzie and Rachael Doyle, and Logan and Asher Youngberg; one brother-in-law, Donald Freers; and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Richard.
