James Edward Hoskins made his final move on Sunday, December 27, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center from complications of an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
Services were held Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Merle Hay Funeral Home with burial at Elkhart Cemetery, Elkhart, IA. Following the burial, a Celebration of Life Party was held at White Oak Winery in Elkhart.
Jim had an undying love for his wife Phyllis, his two sons, Scott and Bart, and his wonderful daughter Dr. Lori Fridrich. Lori resides in Coralville, IA; Scott lives in Overland Park, KS; and Bart lives just “across the pond” in Elkhart, IA.
Jim graduated from Des Moines Technical High in 1951. He then joined the United States Navy for four years during the Korean War, spending, time in San Diego, CA, and Yokosuka, Japan. He received an honorable discharge in 1955. Jim had numerous jobs in his lifetime; sales, radio announcer at KCBC & KSO in Des Moines and several radio stations in Minnesota. In 1962, Jim joined the Des Moines Police Department for six years, leaving as a detective in the Intelligence Division. While at the Police Department, he twice was elected to President of the Des Moines Police Burial Association.
In 1969, Jim received an appointment to the U.S. Treasury Department as a special investigator, where he served for four years AT&F. In 1973, he returned to Des Moines, where he assisted in the opening of CarpentLand USA. Jim ran for Polk County Sheriff, but lost by a narrow margin.
In 1975, Jim joined the management staff at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, starting as Director of Safety and Security. He was then appointed Director of Life Flight, and then was promoted to Director of Risk Management. His last assignment at Iowa Methodist was Special Assistant to Administration, where he conducted all of the investigations needed by the General Counsel’s office. Jim retired from Iowa Methodist in 1993 and played golf to the end.
Jim was born in Camdon Point, MO on May 24, 1932, the fifth child of Alfred and Martha Frances Hoskins. Jim is survived by his wife Phyllis, sons Scott and Bart and daughter Lori. He is also survived by his brother Walter of Rogers, AR. Preceding him in death were his father Alfred; mother Martha Frances; brothers Alfred, Winton and Robert. Grandkids were his pride and joy! They are Ben, Hannah and Abbey Hoskins, Zach and Jake Hoskins and Taylor and Quinn Fridrich. Jim’s favorite song was “My Way,” and he lived that way! Celebrate his life!
