Marjorie “June” Dressler, 88, of Ames, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Marjorie June Dressler passed from this life peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, surrounded by her loving family and attended by the devoted caregivers at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, at Adams Funeral Home, 502 Douglas Ave., in Ames, followed by a private family funeral, with burial in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
June Frady was born June 28, 1921, in Neligh, Neb., to Herbert Frady and Rachel Anderson Frady. She was valedictorian of the Neligh High School Class of 1938 and attended Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Neb., until 1941.
She married Arthur Dressler from nearby Brunswick on June 15, 1941. While her husband was in the South Pacific during World War II, she served as a volunteer firefighter and school bus driver in Chino, Calif., where she lived in a small house with four generations of Fradys.
She was a devoted military wife for 30 years, making a home for her husband and five children in eight states and four countries. When Arthur was away from the family on temporary duty or moved to new assignments in advance of the family, she managed the household on her own. She was smart, ambitious and resourceful.
She had an appreciation for the beauty in this world which she expressed in a number of ways. She was an accomplished seamstress and needle worker all her life and a quilt maker for 20 years, leaving a legacy of quilts and quilt pieces to her family. June also enjoyed gardening, cooking, and flower arranging. Her wry sense of humor and storytelling entertained the family at gatherings. She loved her life as a mother and grandmother.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1970, June and Arthur lived in West Des Moines, Ankeny and finally at Bickford Cottage in Ames. She worked for several years as a tax preparer and consultant at A & C Tax and Bookkeeping in West Des Moines.
She is survived by her children, Joel, Diane (Bob DeMarco), David (Patty Vickers Dressler), Patrick (Mary Weisgram), and Richard (Cindy O’Connell); grandchildren, Fergus Burdon, Matthew and Emily Dressler, Anne Dressler, and Brian and Erin DeMarco; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Estella Frady Hulburd, of North Richland Hills, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Arthur L. Dressler; three brothers, Merle, Jack and Charles Frady; and two sisters, Dena Frady and Ruth Frady Woodruff.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Bickford Cottage in Ames, Mercy Medical Center ER and ICU in Des Moines, and Mercy Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
