Genevieve Magnuson, 92, of Ames and formerly of Boone, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Her wishes were that her body be gifted to the Department of Anatomy at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Genevieve was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Boone County, the daughter of Scott and Vella (Hansen) Payne. She graduated from Jordan Consolidated School. As a youth, she was a member of 4-H and was active in Sunday school and sang in the church choir. On March 14, 1940, she married Ben Magnuson in Boone. To this union were born two sons, Richard and Jerry. The couple farmed near Jordan, where they raised horses and dairy cows. She and Ben loved to ride and show horses. Square dancing was a big part of their lives as Ben was a caller and the couple also taught square dancing. Their square dancing took them all over Iowa and Nebraska. Later, she owned a ceramic and art studio called “Genevieve’s Ceramic Corner” where she taught ceramic classes. Genevieve and Ben enjoyed spending their winters in Mesa, Ariz., for many years. She wrote five books about her life, and she also enjoyed quilting and being with her grandchildren.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Magnuson and his wife, Janine, of Ames; four grandchildren, Scott Magnuson, of Story City, David Magnuson, of Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Jenna and Jerra Magnuson, of Ames; four great-grandchildren, Levi and Brianna Magnuson, of Lee’s Summit, and McKenna and Zachary Magnuson, of Story City; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Magnuson, of Ames; one sister, Elsie Mae Kett, of Florida; and one sister-in-law, Alice Carroll and husband, Earl, of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Richard; one sister, Betty Brown; and one stepsister, Verna Hamm.
