THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, December 1, 2009.

R. Dale Long, 78, of Ames and formerly of Sac City, died Wednesday Nov. 23, 2009, in Ames. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at United Methodist Church in Sac City. Burial will be in Ferguson Cemetery in Lake View. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church.

Dale was born Sept. 17, 1931, in Carroll, to Irven and Winnifred Long. Dale grew up and lived in the Lake View area with his family. He attended and graduated from Lake View High School in 1948.

On Aug. 1, 1954, he married Darlean Bremer in Holstein. Together they lived in Rembrandt, Emmetsburg, Melvin and Sac City and with their three children Jolene, Rick, and Gail. Darlean passed away Jan. 11, 1987.

On July 15, 1994, Dale was remarried to Phyllis Hartman in Sac City. They enjoyed traveling and entertaining in their home, which they had made into a bed and breakfast called the Brick Bungalow. They moved to Ames to be closer to family in 2007.

He worked in fertilizer sales for many years and was employed by Cyanamid and Simplot Soilbuilders, where he was district manager before retiring. He was active in his community and was a past member in the Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of United Methodist Church in Sac City. He enjoyed gardening, visits with family, photography, watching sports, and spending winters in Phoenix with Phyllis. He will be missed by his family and friends, who loved him very dearly.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; children, Jolene (Jerry) Hagstrom, Rick (Ann) Long, and Gail (Dan) Green; stepchildren, Holly (Rick) Sharpe, Anne (Mike) Nierson, and Hanie (Scott Jenson) Hartman; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include his brothers, Leland (Betty Lou) Long and James (Lois) Long; brother-in-law, Verdean (Theone) Bremer; stepmother, Geneva Bremer; stepsisters, Shirley Ewoldt and Bonnie Nissan; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Darlean.

Farber and Otteman Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
