THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, December 2, 2009.
Wendell Eugene Patterson went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday evening, Nov. 30, 2009, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, in the social hall at St. Petri Lutheran Church.
Wendell Eugene Patterson was born Aug. 13, 1932, on the family farm at Stratford, to Fred and Esther (Monson) Patterson. He attended country school and graduated from Stratford High School.
He married Darlene Olson, of rural Stratford, on June 26, 1952, at Stratford Lutheran Church. The couple moved to Camp Chaffee at Fort Smith, Ark., during the Korean Conflict. In 1955, they returned to Stratford where Wendell farmed and worked at the co-op and for an implement dealer. In 1960, he began work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture at the Ames National Animal Disease Center. In 1962, the family moved to rural Story City, where they lived until Wendell and Darlene moved to town in September 2008. His hobby before he retired was manure hauling.
After retiring from the NADC, he took up winemaking and golfing. He was a little better at winemaking than golfing, receiving a Blue Ribbon and a Best of Show on bottles of wine at the Iowa State Fair in successive years. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and their many activities.
Left to cherish his memory are Darlene, his wife of 57 years; their children, Denice (Larry) Reisetter, Donita (John) Grebner, Kevin (Peg) Patterson, Klinton (Lynn) Patterson, Connie (Ben) Demuth, Mike (Darla) Huigens, and Astrid Boenig; two brothers, Ivan and Burton, and their families; and his faithful canine, Sven. In addition, he will be missed by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Louise Patterson; grandson, Kyle Reisetter; and foster son, Randy Merrick.
Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is in charge of arrangements.
