Dorothy H. Thompson, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec.1, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where friends may call after 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Rev. Robert Voels will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy was born Jan. 7, 1927, in Waukon, the daughter of Arthur and Emma (Schnitker) Schmidt. She graduated from the Waukon High School in 1944 where she played basketball. On April 17, 1948, she married Robert Thompson in Cedar Rapids. Dorothy was a homemaker; a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, King’s Daughters; and Keystone Club; she loved to sew, play the piano and enjoyed reading. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and holiday get-togethers.
Survivors include her son, David, of Cedar Rapids; Daughter, Barbara (Neil) Van Slyke, of Ames; Grandchildren, Amy (Andy) Richardson, of Slater, Julie (Kevin) Larsen, of Grimes, and Tricia Higson, of Lewisville, Texas; five great-grandchildren; and sister, Clara Heaton, of Taylors, S.C.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Thompson, on Aug. 31, 2008; daughter, Janet Snow; three sisters; and one brother.
Memorials may be sent in her name to the Trinity United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids.
