THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, November 27, 2009.
Roger Lee Sydnes, 52, of Ames died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at Mary Greeley Medical Center.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29, at Stevens Memorial Chapel. Services will be at 2 .pm. on Monday, Nov. 30, at Stevens Memorial Chapel. The body will be cremated following the services.
Roger was born June 2, 1957, in Ames to Sherald and Marilyn (Trunkhill) Sydnes. He lived all his life in Ames, where he graduated from Ames High School in 1976. Upon graduation, he began a 33-year career at Iowa State University Memorial Union, where he worked in various positions through the years.
He married Kimberly Harris on Aug. 12, 1978. They have two sons, Samuel, 25, and Andrew, 19, both of Ames.
Roger, affectionately known as “Bear” to many family and friends, was a quiet, gentle man who enjoyed music, mystery and science fiction stories, and caring for his pet rabbits.
He is survived by his wife, Kim; two sons, Sam and Andy; his mother-in-law, Marcia Harris, of Panora; one brother-in-law, Mark Harris, of Elkhart; his father and stepmother, Sherald and Penny Sydnes, of Ames; one sister, Sherri Peterson, of Minnesota; stepbrother, Richard Haugland; and stepsister, Robin Fletcher; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Jeanette Trunkhill Sydnes.
The family asks in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Animal Shelter, Ames Public Library or Northminster Presbyterian Church.
