THE TRI-COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, October 29, 2009.

Richard (Dick) Cooper of rural Ames, age 91, died Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Green Hills Heath Center, Ames, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Dick was born August 4, 1918, rural Boone, IA, son of Clarence V. and Anna Jordan Cooper. He graduated from Napier Consolidated School in 1936. Dick married Mildred “Tomy” Thompson on May 22, 1943. He spent his entire life on the farm where he was born. He loved animals and farming. A dream of his was to be a veterinarian. Dick and his father operated a dairy farm, selling milk to Anderson-Erickson Dairy. He also raised feeder cattle and purebred hogs. He showed hogs at fairs taking many grand championships.

Dick was a charter member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Ames. He was a member of the Napier-Alleman Co-op, serving a term as president. Dick served in excess of twenty-three years as a school board member of Napier Schools, which became part of United Community School District. He was a Farm Bureau member and he supported the soybean and corn organizations. Dick loved country music. He was a member of Amestones chorus, singing as a tenor voice. He was a member of a community barbershop quartet. He loved gardening, especially sweet corn and melon crops.

Dick’s sense of humor kept his children and grandchildren entertained. Dick was always compassionate and ready to help others.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and two brothers. He is survived by his wife Mildred (Tomy); six children: Marlys, Ames, Sharon (Jack) Rife, Wilton, IA; Linda “Kathy” (John) Tingleaf, Galva, IL; Dennis, Boone, Dwight (Cindy), Spokane, WA; and Dorothy (Don) Landt, Palo, IA; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Ames, on Wednesday, October 28, at 10:30 AM. Visitation was held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church on Tuesday, October 27 with Christian Vigil.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be designated to Alzheimer’s research or heart research.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames for the dedicated care Dick received.

Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
