THE TRI-COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, October 8, 2009.

HUXLEY – Shirley Ann Gumtau, 68, of Huxley, died Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa.

Shirley was born November 16, 1940, near Boone, Iowa, the daughter of Stanley and Edna (Sampson) Thompson. She was united in marriage to Raymond “Ray” Gumtau on April 4, 1959, in Boone, Iowa. Shirley and Ray enjoyed traveling and had traveled to all 50 states. Ray preceded Shirley in death on September 17, 1999. After Ray’s death, she continued her love of traveling, including trips to New Zealand and Australia.

She was a graduate of Huxley High School and attended AIB in Des Moines and used her skills in a number of office positions, including the ISU Horticulture Department, Ames, and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Des Moines. In retirement, she enjoyed gardening, decorating, traveling and volunteering for the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) and helped with Meals on Wheels.

Shirley is survived by four brothers: Donald E. (Roxanna) Thompson of Ames, IA, Gary L. (Barbara) Thompson of Kelley, IA, Alan S. (Marilyn) Thompson of Kelley, IA, Steven Thompson of Huxley, IA; four sisters: Betty R. (Ralph) Netcott of Ames, IA, Elaine J. (Uldis) Ilvess of Des Moines, IA, Marjorie E. (Mike) Majors of Webster City, IA, Sandra M. (Rick Graham) Bell of Collins, IA; twenty-four nephews and nieces; thirty-five great-nephews and nieces; two brothers-in-law: Richard O. Gumtau of Arlington, TX, Arthur E. (Middy) Gumtau of Oklahoma City, OK; and a sister-in-law: Sue (Trent) Kiersey of State Center, IA.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray; a sister-in-law: Roberta A. Gumtau; and a brother-in-law: Nicholas R. Davis.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday at Palestine Lutheran Church near Huxley. Interment will be in the Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg.

Memorials may be made to the Huxley Clothes and Food Pantry, where Shirley was a generous volunteer.

The Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory in Nevada is handling arrangements.
