THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, September 6, 2009.

Shirley Ann Gumtau, 68, of Huxley, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at Palestine Lutheran Church near Huxley. Interment will be in Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.

Shirley was born Nov. 16, 1940, near Boone, the daughter of Stanley and Edna (Sampson) Thompson. She married Raymond “Ray” Gumtau April 4, 1959, in Boone. Shirley and Ray enjoyed traveling and had traveled to all 50 states. Ray preceded Shirley in death Sept. 17, 1999. After Ray’s death, she continued her love of traveling including trips to New Zealand and Australia.

She was a graduate of Huxley High School and attended AIB in Des Moines and used her skills in a number of office positions, including the ISU Horticulture Department in Ames and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship in Des Moines. In retirement, she enjoyed gardening, decorating, traveling and volunteering for the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) and helped with Meals on Wheels.

She is survived by four brothers, Donald E. (Roxanna) Thompson, of Ames, Gary L. (Barbara) Thompson, of Kelley, Alan S. (Marilyn) Thompson, of Kelley, and Steven Thompson, of Huxley; four sisters, Betty R. (Ralph) Netcott, of Ames, Elaine J. (Uldis) Ilvess, of Des Moines, Marjorie E. (Mike) Majors, of Webster City, and Sandra M. (Rick Graham) Bell, of Collins; 24 nephews and nieces; 35 great-nephews and nieces; two brothers-in-law, Richard O. Gumtau, of Arlington, Texas, and Arthur E. (Middy) Gumtau, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and one sister-in-law, Sue (Trent) Kiersey, of State Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray; one sister-in-law, Roberta A. Gumtau; and one brother-in-law, Nicholas R. Davis.

Memorials may be made to Huxley Clothes and Food Pantry, where Shirley was a generous volunteer.

Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory in Nevada is in charge of arrangements.
