THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, October 2, 2009.

Alice Louise Miller, formerly of Nashville, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A memorial service will be at a later date at Nashville United Methodist Church in Nashville, Ohio.

Alice was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Jamestown, R.I., to William and Elizabeth Gladding. She graduated from Newport High School in Newport, R.I. She was employed as a secretary for the U.S. Navy at Quonset, R.I., following high school. She met her husband, Olen J. Miller, who was stationed at Jamestown during World War II. They were married in 1946 and lived in Ohio together for nearly 50 years.

She belonged to Nashville United Methodist Church and participated in the women’s group in the church. She advised 4-H girls and enjoyed being a member of a neighborhood knitting group. Family members treasure the afghans she has gifted them. Alice and Olen enjoyed being members of a local euchre card club for many years.

She resided in Huxley since 2001, making many friendships at Ballard Creek Assisted Living. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Her memory will be cherished by her son, Daryl and wife, Lisa, of Lakeville, Ohio, and grandchildren, Kristen and husband, Joel Yoder, of Millersburg, Ohio, and Lucas, of Lakeville, Ohio; daughter, Dianne and husband, Hal, and grandchildren, Campbell and Barth, of Catharpin, Va.; and daughter, Bernice and husband, Larry, of Ames, and grandchildren, Brad and wife, Melissa Johnson, and great-grandsons, Ben and Charlie, of Littleton, Colo., and grandson, David Johnson, of Bern, Switzerland; along with many nieces and nephews in Ohio and Rhode Island.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Olen James; her parents, William and Elizabeth Gladding; two sisters; and two brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ballard Creek Assisted Living in Huxley.
