Merle Hemens, 94, formerly of Stanhope, died Sept. 19, 2009, at Crestview Manor in Webster City. Funeral services are pending with Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Merle Hemnes, 94, of Stanhope, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at Crestview Manor in Webster City.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City. Burial will be in the Roland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Merle was born Oct. 7, 1914, in Roland, to Magnus and Frances (Anderson) Hemnes. He was a World War II veteran, serving in France and Germany as a tank driver, and was awarded five Bronze Stars while in the service. Merle farmed near Stanhope for many years. In 2003, he moved to Webster City to Crestview Manor.

He is survived by a sister, Myrtle Peterson, of Salem, Ore.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Floyd, Fred and Andrew; and two sisters, Esther Christian and Abby Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to Roland American Legion Post 307.
