Nina was born Jan. 10, 1917, in Bisbee, Ariz., to Caroline and Louis Hawes. She moved to Indianola when she was 4 years old and lived much of her life there. She was a graduate of Indianola High School and a 1939 graduate of Simpson College where she met her husband, Wilson Goodwin. They were married Aug. 28, 1938.

During World War II, she bonded with a special group of women called “R-9 Club,” whose husbands were all serving in the war and continued these friendships her entire life. She also kept a “round robin” letter going with high school friends who have all lived into their 90s. A former elementary school teacher, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and PEO. Wilson and Nina moved to Des Moines in 1963. Following his retirement in 1985, they moved to Ames.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 71 years, A. Wilson Goodwin, of Ames; two children, Marilyn Lee Manning, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Robert Wilson (Judy) Goodwin, of Ames; eight grandchildren, Diana, Stephen, David, Heather, Melissa, Kirk, Bryan and April; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family is thankful for the care Nina received at Green Hills Healthcare Center and Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
