THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, July 28, 2009.

John “Jack” William Stratton, 84, of rural Collins, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2009, at home in the house where he was born.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at the Collins Christian Church, with a Masonic service at 8 p.m. conducted by the Masonic Lodge 99 of Nevada. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at the Collins Christian Church in Collins, with Pastor Scott Jones officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Collins.

John “Jack” William Stratton was born Nov. 6, 1924, in rural Collins, to Joseph Earl and Ruth Iona (Crabb) Stratton. John was a lifelong Collins resident, graduating from Collins High School in 1942.

From 1945 through 1946, John served in the Army in the Philippines and in Japan in World War II, and he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. John married his high school sweetheart, Anoka Elliott, Nov. 6, 1946, at the Collins Christian Church in Collins. John and Anoka farmed for 22 years in the Collins area. John was postmaster at the Collins post office for 30 years, retiring in 1999.

John was a member of the Collins Christian Church for many years, a 50 year member of the Freeland-Carver American Legion Post 81 of Collins and a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge 99 of Nevada.

John enjoyed being with family and friends and traveling all over the United States to conventions. Most of all he enjoyed dancing.

Surviving John are his wife of 62 1/2 years, Anoka; one son, Kevan Stratton, of Collins; one daughter, Kyla (Barry) Huffaker, of Monroe; one granddaughter, Kara; two great-grandchildren, Chase and Jillian; and one sister, Sharon (Ron) Strawn, of Bellevue, Neb.

John was preceded in death by his parents.

The Fredregill Funeral Home of Collins is in charge of funeral arrangements.
