THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, July 14, 2009.

Derek David Harmon, 27, of Ames, died Friday, July 10, 2009, at his home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley, with the Rev. Tim Maybee officiating. Burial will be in Fjeldberg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church.

Derek David Harmon was born March 25, 1982, in Des Moines, to Charles and Roxann (Tesdall) Harmon. He graduated from Ballard High School in 2000 and was attending Iowa State University. He was an assistant groundskeeper at Veenker Golf Course.

He had been very active at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, gardening and woodworking. He was a Chicago Bears and Cubs fan, and also a fan of the ISU Cyclones. He did summer internships working at golf courses such as Pinehurst in North Carolina, the Biltmore in Chicago and Roaring Fork in Basalt, Colo.

He is survived by his father, Charles D. Harmon; one sister, Danielle Harmon; grandparents, Darrell and Myrna Harmon, of Slater, and David and Verda Tesdall, of Huxley; great-grandmothers, Ruth Alleman Klonglan, of Huxley, and Edna M. Gibson, of Madrid; two aunts, Rajean (Steve) Birkestrand and Krista (Pat) Sheehan; and three cousins, Brandon (Dawnae) Sheehan and Jill Sheehan.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Roxann (Tesdall) Harmon, on Oct. 7, 2003.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Fjeldberg Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home of Slater is in charge of arrangements.
