THE TRI-COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, June 25, 2009.

Lawrence L. Gardner, "L.G." passed away at his home in Bondurant on June 22, 2009. Visitation was held Wednesday, June 24 at Soderstrum Riis Funeral Home, Slater. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday, June 23 at Cambridge United Methodist Church.

He was born on February 17, 1944, to Leland and Neoma Gardner. L.G. spent his years growing up in Cambridge and graduated from Ballard High School in 1962. Following graduation, he attended Iowa State University, but found the working world more to his liking. After working at Iowa Des Moines National Bank and then in the insurance business, he went to work for Des Moines Asphalt and Paving where he worked for close to 30 years.

In 1998, L.G. moved from Des Moines to Bondurant where he resided in the home of his sister, Barbara Gardner. Larry had such a sweet spirit and never knew a stranger. He and Barb would spend hours visiting about his many friends he had met at work and during his pool playing years. When he became your friend, he was your friend for life.

His many enjoyments included sports, playing cards with his friends at "The Cotton Tail," but most of all he always looked forward to playing poker, at which he excelled. He was thankful that when he retired from Des Moines Asphalt due to health reasons, he could spend these leisure times with friends and family.

L.G. was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his sister, Barbara Gardner of Bondurant, and a host of relatives and friends.

Our thanks go out to our neighbors, Craig, Rita, and Laura and the Bondurant Fire and Rescue team who were with him in his final hours on earth. Larry, you are free of pain and with Mom and Dad, now. God bless you and may your memory always shine clear in our hearts.

Memorials may be made to the Bondurant Fire and Rescue.

Soderstrum Riis Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
