Joseph Raymond Smith, 76, of Ames, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Ames. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, at the church.

He was born Dec. 29, 1932, in Pleasanton, to Harry and Irene (Moore) Smith. He went to school in Humeston. He married Ruth Richardson Dec. 16, 1951. In March 1953, he went into the U.S. Army and served in Germany during the Korean War. Returning from the service, he and his family moved to Kelley, where he worked for Clyde Black and Sons. In 1958, they moved to Ames where he joined the Ames Police Department. He retired from there in 1980, and then drove a bus for the Midwest Coach Line. He enjoyed the travel but due to health reasons, he retired and stayed home. He enjoyed his family, fishing, woodworking, ushering at church and watching TV. This is not an end to Joe’s life, but it is a new beginning.

He is survived by his wife of 57 1/2 years, Ruth; two sons, Allen Smith and wife, Diane (Steen), and Michael Smith and wife, Cali (Christy); six grandchildren, Heather Smith, Jake Smith, Coy and wife, Amy Smith, Rick and wife, Donna Sorensen, Scott and wife, Teri Sorensen, and Angela Timp; 10 great-grandchildren, Alec Smith, Brycen Smith, Travis and Trevor Sorensen, Amanda Sorensen, Callie Reed and Cody Deaver, Tyler, Dalton, and Gracie Timp; and one great-great-grandchild, Brant Reed. He also is survived by two sisters, Phyllis and Doyle Martin, of Leon, and Joanne and Loren Owens, of Indianola.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harvey; one sister-in-law, Betty; and one niece, Peggy.
