A. Garberson One of Earliest Pioneers Here

The career of one of the earliest residents of Ames ended with the death of A. W. Garberson at his home in Sibley, Ia., last week.

For a number of years Mr. Garberson lived four miles northest of Ames on the farm now owned by Douglas Meltzer of Des Moines. In 1865 when the North Western railway line was laid thru Ames, Garberson broke ground for the new station.

With his twin brother Calvin. Garberson homesteaded in Buena Vista county in 1869. The two hauled lumber from Nevada to their new land by ox team, themselves walking most of the way. At the time of his death Garberson owned nearly 2,000 acres of land and property in Sibley and Alta, Ia. He lived in a near Alta until 31 years ago when he moved to Sibley.

Garberson was a first cousin of the late Mrs. J. B. Kooser of Ames and of John, Sam, Hannibal, Emma, Maud and Polly Wakefield of Ames and the vicinity. A sister, Mrs. Hattie Robins lives at Correctionville. Three children survive. Howard, a surgeon in Miles City, Mont., Dayton of Sibley and Mrs. Tiller Carter of Hartford, Conn.
