Obituary:

Thelma Elwick, age 88, of Radcliffe, IA, died on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at Colonial Manor of Zearing, IA.

Thelma Oral Elwick was born on September 24, 1920 on the family farm south of Radcliffe, Iowa. She was one of five children born to Milt and Emelia (Valland) Wierson. She was baptized on November 21, 1920 and confirmed December 9, 1934 at the Salem Lutheran Church.

She received her education by attending country school and graduated from Radcliffe High School.

Thelma was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Robert Elwick, on April 21, 1939. To the union a daughter Vonda Lou was born. They lived their entire life on the family farm south of Radcliffe. The farm originally was her grandparents’ farm. The farm is a century farm and is 120 years old this year. Thelma was a hard working farmer’s wife with a strong work ethic. She was a true lover of the land. She enjoyed the comradery with those who shared her interests of farming, fishing, cooking, traveling and reading. After her husband’s death on June 23, 1993, she continued to live on the farm, but in the later years endured many health problems. She moved to Colonial Manor on June 14, 2007.

She attended Salem Lutheran Church her entire life and felt so blessed by the love of her church family.

Thelma passed peacefully on June 9, 2009, surrounded by family. She was under the care of Hospice and the caring staff of Colonial Manor of Zearing, Iowa.

Survivors include her daughter Vonda (William) Fritz of Zearing; granddaughter Peggy of Zearing; grandson Jeffrey (Mindy) of Colo; two great-granddaughters Shelbey and Jacey also of Colo; sister Janet (Jay) Hadley of Union; brother Wallace (Coletta) Wierson of Excelsior, MN; two sisters-in-law Mary Elwick and Donna (Edsel) Lorenzen both of Radcliffe; and many nieces and nephews.

Thelma was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents, two sisters Grace Twedt and Maxine Johnson and a baby brother, Orlen. Also four brothers-in-law Rex Twedt, Jim Johnson, Lowell and Ralph Elwick.

Friends may call at Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe, IA, on Thursday, June 11, 2009 from 5:00 to 7:30 pm.

Service:

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2009 at 1:30 pm at Salem Lutheran Church rural Radcliffe, IA.

Cemetery:

Thelma Elwick will be buried at Radcliffe Cemetery in Radcliffe, IA.
