Harold Wayne Smith Jan. 9, 1930, to Dec. 29, 1995

Harold Wayne Smith, 65, of Nevada, died of cancer on Friday, Dec. 29, at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines.

He was born to Phillip J. and Elizabeth (Goodwin) Smith in Independence.

On Mayt 25, 1954, he married Marlene M. Miller in Independence. He had lived in Estherville, before moving to Nevada, where he had lived for the past 37 years. He worked for 43 years for Fareway Stores - from 1958 to 1978 as manager of the meat department in the Nevada Fareway, and from 1978 to 1992 as a meat cutter in the Ames Fareway Store. After his retirement in 1992, he worked part time at the Nevada American Legion, Spotless Car Wash and the Dollar General Store, all in Nevada.

He had served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada and of the William F. Ball American Legion Post #48 in Nevada.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene Smith of Nevada; four sons, Tim Smith of Iowa Falls, Gary Smith of Ames, Jim Smith of Ankeny and Pat Smith of Pender, Neb.; four daughters, Margaret Hendrick of Overland Park, Kan., Mary Anderson of Minneapolis, Minn., Colleen Smith and Kathleen Smith, both of Ames; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Hubert Smith of Oelwein and James Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; and two sisters, Mary Stewart of Cape Coral, Fla., and Bernita Moon of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.
